The UN system in Kenya has set up the Gender Working Group (GWG) as the coordination structure that will advanced Gender Equality in the UNDAF implementation following a two pronged approach. This will entail standalone GEWE thematic Joint Programmes and the mainstreaming of gender into the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF). The group is chaired by UNESCO and Co-chaired by UNDP with UNWOMEN as the secretariat. Members of the GWG are gender focal persons of all UNDAF Strategic Result areas. The GWG meets every second month.

The GWG aligns its coordination with the Government of Kenya led Gender Sector Coordination Group (GSCG) and the Development Partners Group on GEWE. The GWG serves five purposes:
• Strengthening the overall UNCT coordination and performance on GEWE;
• Engaging with key UNDAF mechanisms to enhance quality of implementation, monitoring and evaluation;
• Supporting resource mobilization for identified JPs and other GEWE initiatives;
• Establishing of policy advocacy platforms; and
• Participating in wider government, development and civil society partnerships for coordination, learning and information exchange
